Sexual Function in Men After Spinal Cord Injury
What is Sexuality? In a broad sense, sexual function in men after spinal cord injury encompasses all feelings, attitudes, and behaviors that contribute to a person feeling like a man or woman, both publicly and privately (Firestone & Catlett, 2006). Sexual health signifies a natural extension of affection, tenderness, and companionship between partners (Firestone & Catlett, 2006).
For those with spinal cord injuries, several questions might arise, such as:
–> Will my injury affect my sexual function?
–> What physical changes should I expect?
–> Will I be able to have orgasms?
–> Can I satisfy my partner?
–> How do I manage my catheter during sex?
–> What about the risk of bowel accidents?
–> Will I be able to have erections?
Prosense Clinic can help answer some of these important questions.

After Spinal Cord Injury
Psychogenic: Due to damage between T11 and L2 vertebrae, messages for psychogenic erections might not pass through.
Reflex: Some men might have erections from catheter changes or penile washing. Understanding your responses can be useful.
Spontaneous: Erections from a full bladder might still occur and can be useful depending on their duration. Erection ability is controlled by nerves in the lower spinal cord (S2,3,4).

Other Considerations
Ejaculation: Often affected and requires complex coordination. Some men may experience ejaculatory sensations without semen release. Retrograde ejaculation can occur if seminal fluid enters the bladder.
Orgasm: Capabilities vary, with many reporting the ability to experience orgasms post-injury.
